Adobe Photoshop 2021 (Version 22.5.1) [Mac/Win]
A Unique Pen Tool
Editor's Note: This tutorial was originally written in 2008, but has been updated and brought up to date for use with the latest versions of Photoshop CS6.
1. Basic Layers and the Pen Tool
In the original version, Photoshop has a large toolbar on the bottom with the various tools and menus. However, it's found by default at the top instead.
With the cursor at the top, we'll start with the Pen Tool. Underneath the Pen Tool is the Layers panel.
If you're unfamiliar with this, it's sort of like layers in a drawing program: You create a new layer by clicking on the New Layer button. Just like in a drawing program, layers can be reordered by dragging them up and down, and they act like windows that you can mask.
The most basic way to manipulate an image in Photoshop is by using the Pen tool. It's used to draw your picture directly over the existing image or just paint where you want a new shape or color to appear in the original image.
The Pen Tool has four basic functions.
Drawing the Shape
With the Pen Tool selected, click on your canvas to begin drawing your new shape. The default options are as follows:
The Pen Tool has two round brushes. A brush with a large diameter (generally between 60 and 100 pixels) creates a circular shape while a brush with a small diameter (typically 5 to 20 pixels) creates a square.
The other two brushes enable the user to draw freehand, starting with a shape close to the current size or dilated. A shape close to the size will be more round, while a shape dilated will be more square.
If you're very experienced with Photoshop, you can create custom brushes, which are called the Brush Tool, and found in the Brush Menu.
Clicking on a box surrounding the current shape creates a selection. This is the equivalent of the Lasso Tool in many other programs. A selection is a black-and-white, image-editing tool that creates a rectangular box around the outline of a shape or specific area. You can use the Select tool to manually make selections.
The Pen Tool does not support the use of selection tools. It is not a color or filter-based tool.
Using the Brush Tool, click and drag to draw lines, shapes, or gradient fills on the canvas.

These tutorials will teach you how to use Photoshop, including all aspects of the editing and design process.
If you want to learn about the art and science of editing images, then Photoshop comes at a hefty price, for quite a lot of people. For most people, and for most projects, Photoshop is not the right tool for the job.
In this article, you’ll learn how to edit and manipulate images in a Photoshop alternative, named GIMP, or GNU Image Manipulation Program.
GIMP is free, open source and cross-platform. You’ll learn how to use it to create complex images and graphic designs, as well as how to use it as a simple graphics editor.
So, if you’re looking for a fast, free alternative to Photoshop to edit images, you should give GIMP a try.

What is GIMP?
“GIMP is a free, open source graphics editor for photo retouching, image composition, and digital painting.” (Wikipedia)
You can use GIMP in Windows, macOS and Linux. However, there are some important differences between Photoshop and GIMP for Linux users.
For instance, the interface is different. Photoshop includes a lot of options that GIMP lacks. And GIMP doesn’t have all the plug-ins that Photoshop does.
There are some GIMP plug-ins that you can use to add certain features that you cannot find in GIMP.
So, it’s best to get a GIMP Linux guide to figure out how to work with Linux and GIMP.
Starting with GIMP
GIMP’s user interface is very simple.
GIMP has a lot of similarities with Photoshop in that you can add and remove layers, recolor and repaint layers, and you can create selections.
However, GIMP is designed to be easier to use. It’s also lighter on your system and doesn’t include some of the features that you’d find in Photoshop.
The GIMP download page also provides a list of the features you can find in GIMP compared to Photoshop.
Here’s an example of the interface.

Introduction to Photoshop
Photoshop allows you to edit any image. You can turn an image into something completely new by changing it in Photoshop, from a simple image to something more complex. This software has a multitude of tools that allow you to make changes to your image. Photoshop offers most of these features, but some features are only available in certain versions or operating systems.
